The DR Congo international is ready for his third loan match away from the bet365 stadium
Millwall completed the signing of Benik Afobe on a season-long loan deal from champions Stoke City.
The 28-year-old will spend the 2021-22 campaign in the Den after returning from a loan spell in the Turkish Super Light with Trabzonspor.
Despite his contribution of five goals in 28 league games for the Black Sea storm over the past term, it appears that Afobe is redundant to the requirements in Michael O’Neill’s squad, and he has been released for his third loan spell.
The move is a return to Millwall for the DR Congo striker who previously played five Championship games for the Lions in the 2012-13 season.
“I am delighted. The most important thing was to try to do things as soon as possible so that I could have a good pre-season, get to know the young people and staff and be ready to start in August,” said Afobe. the club’s website.
“It’s about building a bond with everyone as soon as possible. I’ve been following the club for the last few years and I know they have some good guys and a good locker room – I want to be a part of it. “
The temporary move reunites the former Arsenal youngster with his former Stoke City boss Gary Rowett in the Den, and he reveals how convinced he was to make the switch to south-east London.
“Gary brought me to Stoke City and was really good to me,” he continued. ‘I enjoyed working with him on the practice field and on match days, and when he told me about the project he had in Millwall and how he thought it could fit into the team and the group, it was for me and my family a non-decisive case.
Millwall finished the 2020-21 championship season in 11th place and Rowett is excited about the quality that Afobe will add to his attacking options.
“Benik comes in and adds a recognized goal scorer with the championship quality and experience we wanted to give to give us another option in the advancing areas,” the manager said.
“I believe it is a good timing for Benik and that we are a good option for him in terms of where he should be and what he wants to do next season. I am excited that all the players should come here.”
