Al Ahly Mosimane thought Hunt would lead Bafana Bafana, not Chippa United

The experienced South African coach has made a surprising decision to join the league team that struggled to stay in the top class last season

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane said he thought Chippa United’s new coach Gavin Hunt would be appointed as Bafana Bafana tactician.

Mosimane chooses Hunt’s coaching performance as one of the reasons that put him in a good position to manage the national team. final in Cameroon.

‘But he [Hunt] did very well – he gave Wits a title after 100 years. And he did well. Look at the trophies he won, ”Mosimane said in an interview with the South African Association of Football Journalists (Safja).

“He came to Amakhosi – yes, of course it did not go well. I thought he would be a ‘Bafana coach’ to be honest with you. I thought he would get a chance to coach Bafana.

‘But I read a lot of your stuff [in the press] and people who talk and say that probably his philosophy, his way of playing does not match the way Bafana plays.

“But I don’t know if we should play the way Bafana do, or we should win.”

Suggestions have been made that the pragmatic style that Hunt incorporates into the teams he has coached is at odds with the way Safa want Bafana Bafana to play.

However, Mosimane degenerated into such talks, citing the example of Hunt’s successor to Kaizer Chiefs Stuart Baxter, who has twice been appointed Bafana boss, despite his tendency to line up his teams defensively.

‘I do not know what his philosophy is ‚and I do not know what [Stuart] Baxter’s philosophy is: If we say Gavin did not have the right philosophy ‚why did Baxter leave? [South Africa] twice and come for the third time if he does not have the right philosophy? asks Mosimane.

“It’s not for me to comment, to be honest. I’m talking about Gavin and no coach has won titles like him.”

The PSL winner explained what life is like in Egypt, and also claims that Hunt can coach in North Africa: ‘I believe coach Gavin can coach in North Africa, no doubt about it. But he chose Chippa, it’s his life.

“North Africa, life here is not playing golf and all that, there is no life, forget it,” Mosimane continued.

‘I can not go to a mall, I was there once in nine months and I was escorted by three bodyguards because people look at football differently.

“Imagine that fans who exceed the population of South Africa 70 million, there is no space, you can not move. It’s crazy. But I think Hunt can come here.”

Hunt was appointed head coach on Wednesday, Chippa United, who had 13 coaches over the past five years and maintained the highest level through the playoffs in June.
