Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s journey to Euro 2020 ended after they lost 1-0 to Belgium in the round of 16.
The Portuguese talisman has scored five times in four appearances in the Euros this time, setting several records. With his first goal in the tournament against Hungary, he surpasses the nine goals of Michel Platini to become the tournament’s highest goal scorer of all time. He finished the tournament with 14 goals to his name.
Ronaldo also became the all-time top scorer in international football, beating Iranian legend Ali Daei by 109 goals.
But it’s not just the Portuguese star who is making records. His closest rival Lionel Messi was also in the news for his achievements for Argentina in the ongoing Copa America 2021.
Messi scored his 57th international goal through a free kick in the start of the tournament against Chile, which exceeded Ronaldo’s 56 free kick goals. He is now just five goals behind Diego Maradona.
Against Bolivia in Argentina’s last group match, Messi played his 148th international match for La Albiceste, most by an Argentine player surpassing Javier Mascherano (147). He also scored a prop in his team’s 4-1 victory and took his international goals to 75, becoming the ninth highest goal scorer in the all-time list.
