Fans believe broadcasters misrepresented Shafali Verma’s age

India Women opener Shafali Verma became the youngest cricketer to use her trade in all formats of the game when she made her debut during a one-day match England Women on Sunday 27 June.

Shafali was only 17 years and 150 days old when she achieved this feat. The India Cricket Management Board (BCCI) tweeted an image of the moment Rohtak was born handing over cap number 131 from her skipper Mithali Raj.

“A proud moment for the thunderstorm @TheShafaliVerma when she got #TeamIndia 131 from captain @ M_Raj03. Here’s the hope that she’s having a crushing debut. # ENGvsIND, ” tweeted the BCCI.

Broadcast channels such as SONY TIEN in India and SKY SPORT in England said she was 28 years old when she came in to bat.

Indian fans were furious about this folly and turned to Twitter to point out the mistake.

Meanwhile, Shafali failed to prove her steel in the first ODI as she was fired for a mere 14-ball 15 by Katherine Brunt. The English pacemaker bowled a short delivery after which Shafali had the highest point Anya bush mid-on.

India awarded a respectable 201/8 position in their fifty overs, but England Women chased it comfortably in 34.5 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Shafali impressed everyone earlier with her home game during the one-off Test against English Women when she beat 96 and 63 in the two overs. Indian women fought a brave battle and drew the red ball match.

India Women will pull up their socks for the second meeting of the ODI series of three matches taking place on Wednesday (June 30) in Taunton.
