Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar, 98 years old, died in Mumbai on Wednesday due to long-term illness.

“With a heavy heart and deep sadness, I announce the passing of our beloved Dilip Saab, a few minutes ago. We are of God, and to Him we return, ” Mr Kumar’s friend Faisal Farooqui wrote on the actor’s official Twitter handle.

Kumar received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award – the country’s highest award in the art form. He was also honored with the Padma Vibhushan – India’s second highest civilian award.

After his sad death, many well-known names in the cricket fraternity paid tribute to Mr. Kumar.

Former Indian captain and a legend of the game, Sachin Tendulkar, brought his sincere tribute to Mr. Kumar’s family. He wrote: “Rest in peace, Dilip Kumar ji! There will never be another like you. Your contribution to Indian cinema is unparalleled, and you will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to Saira Banu ji and the family. ”

Current Indian skipper Virat Kohli writing: “Today, an icon that has been loved for generations is about Russia in peace, Dilip ji. My condolences to the family. ”

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh expressed his condolences and said that Kumar’s contribution to the cinema was unparalleled and unprecedented.

‘Deeply sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Kumar ji. Another legend passes, marking the end of an era. His contribution to the theater is unparalleled and unprecedented. My deepest condolences to the family, “ Yuvraj tweeted.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan mentioned Mr Kumar as inspiration for future generations while paying tribute to the legendary actor.

‘Deeply saddened by the passing of Dilip Sahab. A genius actor who has made such a huge impact in Indian film. An inspiration for generations to come. Folded hands #DilipKumar, ” Dhawan wrote on the microblog site.

Former batsman from India VVS Laxman writing: ‘End of an era. My sincere condolences to #DilipKumar Sahab’s family and fans around the world. Legends like him live on through their exemplary work. ”
