Matthew Wolff, which is the no. 35 is in the field and at the end of 2020 was a 15th place after strong finish in the big championship, is among three golfers who decided not to play next week in The Open at Royal St. George’s to play.
Wolff, who gave no reason to withdraw from The Open, openly discussed mental health issues that caused him to take a two-month break from the match before the US Open. The R&A has announced that Wolff will be replaced in the field by England’s Andy Sullivan.
Danny Lee, who withdrew from the John Deere Classic on Friday, withdrew from The Open due to injury. KH Lee withdraws due to the birth of his child. They will be replaced by Antoine Rozner of France and Troy Merritt of the USA
Wolff (22) was runner-up Bryson DeChambeau last year at the US Open. He has never played in The Open.
He suffered several injuries earlier this year and then disappeared from the tournament’s golf course after the team meet in New Orleans. He was disqualified at the Masters because he signed a wrong scorecard.
Wolff did not return before the US Open, where he contested before settling a tie for 15th place. He then finished 58th at the Traveler Championship and missed the track at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The three join several released players skipping The Open, including Kevin Na, who said last week that he would not participate due to the complications associated with travel and the coronavirus pandemic.
“The love for the game really went away from me,” Wolff said following the second round of the US Open in Torrey Pines, where he was just a shot out of the lead at the time. ‘best, I’m grinding and things are not going my way.
“I really came down on myself and honestly, I felt a little hopeless. I was probably just the first time a few days ago that I really found hope in my game and my happiness out here. It’s easy to be happy when you play well, but it’s hard to put things in perspective and not be so hard on yourself when you’re trying to perform at the highest level here, I’m glad I’m enjoying myself out here again, but It is not easy. ‘
Wolff was a four-time American in Oklahoma State and won the NCAA title in 2019. He then wins the 3M Open in his rookie PGA Tour season and joins Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods as the only players to win the NCAA event and a PGA tournament in the same calendar year.
