Italian hero Donnarumma has been named the Euro 2020 player of the tournament

The goalkeeper shot twice to glorify the Azzurri in the final against England at Wembley

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been named the most outstanding player of Euro 2020 after leading the Azzurri to glory at Wembley Stadium.

Donnarumma, who officially became the first goalkeeper to earn the honor, saved twice in the penalty shootout in Italy’s victory over England and locked up the victory after a 1-1 draw by 120 minutes.

In total, the keeper conceded only four goals throughout the tournament and never allowed more than one in any game, as the Azzurri triumphed just four years after the sadness of the World Cup qualifier.

Donnarumma and Italy won the title

Donnarumma and Italy came from a group that included Turkey, Switzerland and Wales by scoring seven goals while conceding nothing.

They took on Austria and Belgium to open the knockout stages on the same 2-1 standings and bring about a heavyweight clash with Spain in the semi-finals.

After a 1-1 draw through the 120 minutes, Italy secured a 4-2 victory to advance to the final, where they won 3-2 in another battle to defeat England.

What’s next for Donnarumma?

Donnarumma has been in the spotlight since 2015 when he made his debut for AC Milan before his 17th birthday.

He made 251 appearances for the Serie A giants, earning his first 32 appearances for Italy.

However, the 22-year-old goalkeeper is currently a free agent as he has seen his contract with Milan expire.

Donnarumma is now expected to join Paris Saint-Germain, as will Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi and Gini Wijnaldum as those of the summer in the French capital.
