Nigeria arrives in Mexico friendly in the United States

The Super Eagles landed in the North American country on Thursday night in the run-up to the friendly match against El Tri

Nigeria landed in the United States on Thursday night ahead of Saturday’s international friendly against Mexico.

The Super Eagles – dominated by players in the Nigerian Professional Soccer League, tackle Gerrie Martino’s El Tri at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The three-time delegation of African champions included 22 players, some officials, as well as Mohammed Sanusi, the general secretary of the Nigerian Football Federation.

Meanwhile, organizers of the blockbuster friendship expect a full house in the Colosseum with 77,500 capacity – the most visited game worldwide since the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 were lifted.

Goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa suffered an ankle injury during a training session and he will miss the match against the North Americans.

As a result, Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi has been invited to improve on the goalkeeper division that John Noble of Enyimba FC and Stanley Nwabali of Lobi Stars have.

The last meeting between the two countries was in a friendly match on the way to the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

After 90 minutes of entertaining action, the Super Eagles and El Tri drew 0-0 at the Georgia Dome, with goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa making some good saves to deny the late Stephen Keshi’s men.

The two teams will meet for the sixth time ever, with four of their previous encounters on a no-win, no-win note. The only victory in the series belongs to Mexico, which defeated Nigeria in an American Gold Cup match in Texas.

Despite the lead by Jonathan Akpoborie at Cotton Bowl Stadium, the Mexicans fought back to secure a 2-1 victory with the goal of Alberto Garcia Aspe and Ignacio Ambriz.

For Mexico, who are the most successful team in the Concacaf Gold Cup with eight titles, this match is part of their MexTour series.
