‘Southgate have been watching Musiala since he was 10’ – England coach was a long-term admirer of the teenager from Germany and Bayern Munich

The midfielder’s former coach of the school team reflected on the early years of the former Chelsea youngster before a big showdown with the Euro 2020 final 16

Former sports teacher Jamal Musiala has revealed that Gareth Southgate has been watching the teenager from Germany since he was 10 years old.

Musiala is currently playing for Germany at the European Championships, having earned a place in Joachim Low’s squad after an impressive breakthrough season at Bayern Munich.

The 18-year-old previously represented England at the U15, U16, U17 and U21 level, but chose to retire earlier this year and now hopes to play for Germany against the Three Lions at Wembley on Tuesday.

Musiala, the coach of the old school, Tony Mesourini, remembered how the midfielder Southgate initially stood out in 2013.

The former Chelsea youngster was playing for his primary school at the time and took part in a training session supervised by Southgate before playing in the final of the ‘npower Kids Cup’ at Wembley.

Southgate’s praise for Musiala

Southgate reserved some praise for Musiala during his last press conference ahead of England’s clash with Germany, while conceding that he would like to see him represent the Three Lions.

‘With Jamal he’s a very good young player, he and Jude [Bellingham] was in youth matches that I watched in the past, ”said the English boss.

“We were hopeful that he would stay with us, but fully understand his decision, and it’s nice for him to be able to get a few minutes in this championship.”

Musiala’s career record so far

Musiala became the youngest player to play for Bayern in the Bundesliga when he made his club debut against Freiburg last June, and has since held a firm place in the team.

The talented young game creator has scored seven goals in his first 38 matches for the German champions, and won his first league title on the road, and he has already had four caps to his name internationally, with his latest appearance for Germany in their 2 equal to Hungary in the Euros group stage.
