World Cup Qualifiers: 2022: Which teams play the most players abroad?

Where does India stand in the list of teams whose players play club football outside the country …

India’s 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup in the second round ended on 15 June with a 1-1 draw against Afghanistan in Doha, Qatar.

Igor Stimac’s team finished third in Group E with seven points from eight matches behind Qatar and Oman. While the Blue Tigers did not make the next round of the World Cup qualifiers, they advanced directly to the third round of the 2023 Asian Cup.

It was a mixed experience for the Blue Tigers who scored six goals in eight games but conceded only seven. Against the higher ranking Oman and Qatar, Stimac’s team conceded only four goals, and they were also able to score the reigning Asian champion, Qatar, in the first match in Doha.

While the team’s defensive record improved a lot compared to their last campaign where they conceded 18 goals, there was no significant progress in the attack as India could only find the back of the net six times.

Not a single player in the current Indian group plays their club football outside the country. Out of the 40 countries that took part in the qualifiers, 29 teams had at least one player who traded abroad.

In the Vietnamese team, their star goalkeeper Vng Văn Lâm is the only player to practice his trade in the J-League at the Cerezo Osaka club. Unfortunately, Dang was not available for selection in the final phase of the recent thinning out, as he tested positive for COVID 19.

While there are no players currently playing outside the country in the national teams in Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, there are currently a number of players in the countries outside the national team doing their trade in foreign leagues. Players like Fahad al-Muwallad and Salem al-Dawsari only played three seasons back in Spain. While Muwallad was loaned to Levante, Dawsari played for La Liga team Villarreal.

The leagues in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also one of the best in Asia. Their clubs consistently perform well in the AFC Champions League (ACL). Saudi Arabian Al-Hilal has won the ACL twice in the past five seasons.

It is interesting that most players in Qatar have regularly visited abroad in Europe, and they also train at the Aspire Academy, which is considered as one of the best training facilities in the world.

Afghanistan, which finished in Group E under India in India, has the most players playing outside the country (24), followed by Australia, Syria and Iran.

Almost every major team on the continent plays their players in a league that is higher than their local leagues. Most players from Iran, Japan and South Korea usually do their trading in Europe.

Teams ranked in India such as Thailand or Bahrain also play in the best Asian leagues such as South Korea or the United Arab Emirates.

Teams like Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Cambodia and the Maldives all play their national players in their respective countries. All of these teams finished last or second in their groups in the elimination.

Interesting for Bangladesh, captain Jamal Bhuyan recently played in India.
