In a dramatic quarter-final with a tense, action-packed fourth quarter, France overtook Spain 67-64 to advance to the semifinals of women’s basketball at the Tokyo Olympics. This will be France’s third consecutive semi-final in the Summer Games; the French last won 2012 when they took home silver.
While France came out early (21-16 after the first quarter and with 36-30 at halftime) and led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, a brave Spanish effort won the game from anyone during cricket time. the teams exchanged both baskets and crimes in a heartbreaking way. Even the French field goal that sealed the deal – a marine Johannès starter – barely counted, with just 0.1 seconds left on the shot clock, to make Spain’s last return attempt disappear.
Finally, Spain’s big advantage in attacking rebounds (17-5) and forced turnover (19-13) was not enough to offset its cold shot (34 percent). Astou Ndour-Fall ended her strong trip to Tokyo with an impressive display of 16 points, 11 rebounds, but Spain hit only five three-pointers and could not earn a few shots in the late game on the edge non-shots that would changed the course of the game and possibly the tournament itself.
France is rather going to the famous Olympic area. Host Japan – fresh off a exciting quarterfinal of his own – wait. The match is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
