The Argentine maintained that he was fully committed to the project for which he joined Camp Nou despite the departure of his compatriot
Sergio Aguero has denied the existence of a Lionel Messi-related release clause in his contract at Barcelona.
Aguero signed a free transfer at Barca after leaving Manchester City in June and signing a two-year contract at Camp Nou.
It was initially suggested that one of the main reasons why the 33-year-old decided to join the Blaugrana was a link with the other Argentine international Messi, but he eventually had to put an end to his 21-year allegations at the club due to their struggle to get below La Liga’s salary cap.
What was said?
Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain shortly after his departure from Camp Nou was confirmed, after which it was reported that Aguero had demanded a suspension of his contract with Barca.
The experienced striker has now set the record and insisted that his contract never stipulated that Messi’s future was in any way linked to his own.
“I do not understand why this was discussed. When I signed, Leo did not sign anything. They come to an agreement,” Aguero said. RAC1.
“It was found that there was a clause, but there was nothing.”
Asked if he wants to come out with the Blaugrana in the Champions League against Messi, the former City star replied: “I have confronted Messi before, but it would be very nice. Now … we know it when Leo turns on the light it is impossible to stop him. ”
Aguero on his recovery from injury
Aguero have to wait for his Barca debut due to a serious calf injury, which has already caused them to miss their first three La Liga matches of the new season.
The Spanish giants initially gave a period of ten weeks for the recovery of the forward at the beginning of August, but he is optimistic to return sooner.
“I’m doing well. There’s no prediction of when I’ll be back, but I’m going forward and maybe I can recover in a few weeks,” Aguero said.
Barca’s silverware chances assessed
Aguero expressed his belief that Barca can still enjoy a successful season despite the loss of Messi and a number of other high-profile stars, including Antoine Griezmann – who rejoined Atletico Madrid on the deadline.
“We have a lot of good players. Those who are left are important, but Barca still have enough players to cover it,” he added.
“Just because we are Barça, we have to fight for all the titles. I do not think we are favorites for the Champions League, but our competitors respect us.”
