The Argentine striker can now doubt the start of the new La Liga season after suffering a calving issue
Sergio Aguero was forced to cancel the Joan Gamper Trophy match with Barcelona due to the injury.
Aguero would make his debut for Barca in Sunday’s friendly after joining the club on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City in June.
However, fans will have to wait a while longer before seeing the 33-year-old in action, while a calving issue will decide him from his last outing before the season.
What was said?
Barca have also confirmed that Clement Lenglet will join Aguero from the sidelines after suffering a knee injury, but Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho is in line to appear against Juve.
‘Philippe Coutinho is fit to return to action, but Clement Lenglet and Sergio Aguero are both out,’ reads a statement on the club website read.
‘The French defender has a tendon problem in his right knee and is ruled out, and his return depends on his recovery.
“The Argentine striker has a right leg injury and will undergo more tests to find out the exact extent of the injury.”
How many other games can Aguero miss?
Aguero may now be in doubt for Barca’s start to the 2021-22 season against Real Sociedad on 15 August.
The Blaugrana are also set to play Athletic Club and Getafe by the end of the month, and head coach Ronald Koeman will be hoping Aguero recovers quickly while improving on third-placed La Liga in the third quarter.
How did the departure of Messi affect Aguero?
Barcelona sent shockwaves through the football world after announcing the departure of captain Lionel Messi on Thursday, while the 34-year-old refused the chance to sign a new contract amid the club’s ongoing financial crisis.
Aguero was open about liaising with his fellow Argentine at club level, and it is alleged that the news forced him to think about his future at Camp Nou.
But, the former City star has confirmed that he will continue as a Barca player after arriving at the club’s training ground at the weekend, he told reporters: “Do not worry, you have been with me all year.”
