A man who enjoyed a productive loan spell at the Magpies last season is still seeing a move away from North London that is being speculated about
Mikel Arteta claims he is in the dark as to Joe Willock’s future at Arsenal, while Newcastle are still hoping to take the 21-year-old midfielder back to their books.
A highly regarded product of the Gunners academy system took a productive loan spell at the Magpies last season, scoring eight goals in 14 games.
Another period in St James’ Park is argued, in the short or long term, but Arteta included Willock in his plans again during the pre-season in North London.
What was said?
Asked for an update on Willock and the rest of the exciting talks following a friendly defeat against Chelsea, Arteta said: ‘I do not know (whether they will).
“I’m going to coach and train them, respect and take care of everyone, because they are our players.
“Hopefully they can have their thoughts and prepare here, because they are Arsenal players, and our job is to make them as good as possible.”
What is the position of Newcastle?
Willock has seen playing time for Arsenal against Chelsea, but Arteta wants to give as many players as possible an opportunity to impress.
Newcastle are hoping to open before the August 31 deadline, but Steve Bruce is still waiting for the Gunners to give him a definitive answer.
He told reporters after beating his side Burton Albion 2-0 on Friday: ‘We did not make a bid for any player because Joe was our first goal.
“We need to make sure that if that does not happen, we have who we think is our second choice. We will develop that in the coming days.”
