Former Australian captain Mark Taylor raises his voice for Australian batsman Steve Smith to return as the Test captain in As.
Australia’s regular Test captain Tim Paine will undergo surgery for a pinched nerve in his neck, which will take him time to recover before the ashes. But the Hobart-born cricket is confident he will make it to the Australian squad in the opening match against England in Brisbane.
I would not rule out Steve Smith returning as captain of Australia: Mark Taylor
Smith was removed from Australia’s captaincy following the infamous ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in the third Test in Cape Town in 2018, which resulted in him and his deputy David Warner receiving a year-long suspension from Cricket Australia.
However, Smith and Warner return to the national team to play in the 2019 World Cup in England and also take part in the Ashes that they successfully retained after leveling the series 2-2.
Australian pass bowler Pat Cummins is the likely replacement for Tim Paine as captain of the team because he was the team’s vice-captain, but Taylor said he could not exclude Steve Smith from the position.
‘I would not rule out Steve Smith returning as captain of Australia. I think enough time, enough water has gone under the bridge since 2018 and what happened in South Africa. Pat Cummins would definitely be in the pole position as he is currently the vice-captain. I think Australia has options. “I was absolutely amazed at the news of Tim Paine,” Taylor told Wide World of Sports.
I think at this point the run is definitely between Alex Carey and Matthew Wade if Paine is not playing: Mark Taylor
Taylor feels that Matthew Wade or Alex Carey should put on the gloves for the goalkeeper if Paine is not available, instead of young sensational players like Joshua Philippe and Josh Inglis.
‘I do not think for Test matches at this stage (Inglis and Philippe have no chance), no. I do not think they have done enough for their respective states. They may have done good things in Big Bash and the white ball form of the game, but I think both guys need to show me that they are proven and first-class performers before I select them for a Test match. “I think at this stage the run is definitely between Carey and Wade if Paine does not play,” said Taylor.
The Ashes are unlikely to take place if senior English players withdraw their names, depending on the quarantine rules in Australia during that period.
