ATK Mohun Bagan: Everything you need to know about the foreign contingent of Bagan

The Kolkata side has already signed six foreigners …

ATK Mohun Bagan looks well on track to tackle another challenge in the Indian Super League (ISL) in the coming season. After missing the AFC Champions League place in Mumbai City last season, the Mariners will be desperate to clinch the ISL shield this time around.

They have already completed their foreign contingent, with six overseas players already putting the pen to paper for the team in Kolkata. While retaining Roy Krishna, David Williams, Tiri, Carl McHugh, they added Hugo Boumous and Joni Kauko to the list. Let’s look at these six players in detail.

Roy Krishna

The productive striker needs no introduction, and again, for the third consecutive season, the Fijian will be in charge of Bagan’s attack. He was the joint top scorer alongside Igor Angulo of FC Goa last season after scoring 14 goals from 23 matches. He also provided eight assists during the period, but could not lead his way to the title. However, he won the title in 2019-20 after defeating Chennaiyin in the final.

He has already joined the team’s training sessions in Kolkata and will fly to the Maldives on August 14 for the upcoming AFC Cup assignment. Here are his stats for ATK Mohun Bagan.

David Williams

The Australian forward has signed an extension with ATK Mohun Bagan which will keep him at the club for a third year. After a brilliant first season in which he scored seven goals and scored five assists, he had a muted campaign of 2020-21. Injuries hampered his performance and most of his appearances were off the bench. However, he scored six goals and his combination with Krishna in the attacking third was sometimes effective for Antonio Habas’ team.

Management did an incredibly good job of flying him out of Australia just before the AFC campaign. Williams joined the practice on Thursday and will be part of the team that will travel to the Maldives. Here are his stats for ATK Mohun Bagan.

Carl McHugh

The versatile player will be a key member for the Mariners in their quest to win the AFC Cup and the ISL title. He is one of the most trusted lieutenants of Antonio Habas who can play in the middle of the park as well as in defense. In the absence of Sandesh Jhingan, it will not be surprising if McHugh is used by the Spanish coach as a center-back.

He has joined the team’s training session and will fly to the Maldives for the AFC Cup. Here are his stats for ATK Mohun Bagan.

Lote

The Spanish defender was one of the mainstays of the ATK Mohun Bagan defense. He joined Jamshedpur FC and was one of the first names on the team sheet for Antonio Habas. However, he has not yet joined the group and will not travel to the group stage of the AFC Cup. However, if Bagan progresses to the knockout blows, he could be included in the group. Here are his stats for ATK Mohun Bagan.

Joni Kauko

The Finnish midfielder is a new sign for the Mariners and perhaps one of the most interesting. He will be expected to further strengthen the midfield, provided Habas decides to deploy McHugh as a defender. Kauko was part of the Finnish national team during Euro 2020, where he played as a substitute in all three of the group matches. With Inter Turku and later Esbjerg in 2019, the Finnish player has played four editions of the Europa League and has eight European appearances in his cat. He trained with the team in Kolkata, but was left out of the AFC group. Here are his statistics for Esbjerg, a Danish second division, from last season.

Hugo Boumous

The productive attacking midfielder has joined ATK Mohun Bagan of Mumbai City FC. The Frenchman has produced the most assists in the history of ISL, 24 in 56 games, and is one of the best foreign players to ever play in the league. Boumous won the Golden Ball award in the 2019-20 season while playing for FC Goa. His inclusion will definitely add more firepower to Bagan’s attack. Here are his stats for Mumbai City FC in the previous season.
