Awako: Hearts of Oak midfielder calms expectations for Caf Champions League campaign

The new signing shares his thoughts on the club’s chances in the elite continental interclub championship

Ghana’s international Gladson Awako wants Hearts of Oak fans to control their expectations for the club in the Caf Champions League.

The Phobians will close horns at the Guinean folding club, Industriel de Kamsar, in the preliminary round of the elite Africa Championship later this month.

This will return the Ghanaians to continental action for the first time in 10 years.

“They [Hearts fans] should not expect too much. We will do our best, we will do what we can to get to the money zone, which will not be easy, ”said Awako, who recently made a move to Hearts. Joy Sports.

‘But I know with the team, the management and the support of the chairman of the board, I will do our best to get to the money zone.

“So they should not expect too much that we will win the trophy. They need to limit the expectation, which will take pressure off the team. ”

Last month, Awako switched to Hearts, which left the Great Olympics opponents to sign a two-year deal.

The Kamsar duel is likely to provide a competitive debut for the striker, who previously played for the Congolese giant Tout Puissant Mazembe in the competition.

“It’s good to be part of this competition, to take part in the Champions League,” said the 30-year-old.

‘Yes, I and the fans know that the club wants to get there itself, which we all know is not that easy.

‘It’s been a very long time since Hearts took part in such a tournament, so I’m begging the fans to calm down and support us.

Hearts, African champions in 2000, secured qualification for the Champions League by winning the Ghana Premier League 2020-21.

It was indeed a glorious season for the Phobians who also won the FA Cup for a double. Their cup victory also won a qualifying ticket for the Caf Confederation Cup.

Against Kamsar, Samuel Boadu’s team must move away for the first match, before returning to Accra for the reverse match.

The winners after two legs tackle the Moroccan team Wydad Casablanca in the next round.
