The Cricket Board of India (BCCI) working group recommended the Apex Council that the cricketers should be compensated for the loss of payment due to the COVID-19 pandemic that devastated the local cricket calendar, which led to the cancellation of the Ranji season 2020-21.
Currently, a domestic player selected in the first XI of his state team is paid Rs 35,000 per day and a match fee of Rs 1.5 lakh for one match. A team usually plays 8-9 games per season, given the current format of the tournament, which means that the cancellation of the previous season of the Ranji trophy means a huge loss of revenue for players who rely solely on cricket.
Domestic cricketers can receive a minimum compensation of 50 percent of their total match money
The BCCI working group recommended that domestic cricketers be paid at least 50 percent compensation of their total match money. However, the final decision will be made by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah, who will discuss the issue with Apex board members on September 20.
India Today reported that a number of proposals were discussed by the committee, consisting of former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, Yudhvir Singh, Santosh Menon, Jaydev Shah, Avishek Dalmiya, Rohan Jaitley and Devajit Saikia.
‘The final decision lies with Secretary Jay Bhai, but what most members agreed on was a lump sum of 50 per cent of the total match money for playing all the league matches in a Ranji season. There has been a debate as to whether only those who have played at least one game in the 2019-20 season will be considered or at least players from the past two seasons.
The decision will be made by the office bearers as the amount of expenses is their domain. But according to the mathematics, the committee wants the player to be paid a minimum of 50 percent, and it can amount to 70 percent, ‘ added the source.
It was also reported that the domestic cricketers’ increase in match fees would be approved by the president and secretary. Currently, the general consensus is that the new match fee will be between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh.
