India’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has said that English versatile Ben Stokes must reveal the reason behind his mental health issues, which led to him taking an indefinite break before the start of the five-match Test series between England and India.
Gavaskar’s position is that Stokes, who make his speech known, can help young people and other players deal with their own mental health problems. Stokes shocked the cricket world by announcing his suspension of cricket, which received full support from the English and Welsh Cricket Board (ECB), English Test captain Joe Root and the entire English team.
If Stokes can come out and say that’s the reason, it’s going to help a lot of younger players: Sunil Gavaskar
Ben Stokes lost his father Ged in December 2020 after a long period with cancer. He then suffered a finger fracture while playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2021, and is undergoing rehabilitation and has just started playing cricket in the hundreds again.
He was prematurely called by the ECB to lead the English team in their one-day series against Pakistan after the first-choice players were in isolation due to COVID-19 infections in the camp. Despite England leading to a 3-0 victory in the series with many new faces, Stokes said he would not yet recover from his finger injury and that he wanted to take time.
Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar has argued that if Stokes reveals the reasons behind his mental health disruption, it could help other young players open up their problems and get help for them.
‘What will help others who are in a similar situation is if these players indicate the real reason for this mental health problem. Is it, for example, fear of failure, is it the burden of expectations, is it the fear of opposition or the fear of injuries? ‘These are some things that can cause mental stress,’ ‘ Gavaskar said at a press conference.
‘If Stokes can come out and say that’s the reason, it will help a lot of younger players who are going through the same situation, they would think that it’s not just them, and that even an excellent player like Stokes would be in a situation. Come like this. ‘If you just say mental health is a common problem, so I hope someone can determine the reason and it will definitely help the others,’ he said.
The first Test between England and India starts on 4 August in Nottingham.
