Charles Barkley says he is an improved golfer and recommends that people wait for him during this week’s Century Championship golf tournament.
And so are they.
Caesars Sportsbook at William Hill is offering a yes / no stick on whether Barkley will finish in the top 70 at the tournament, which is in Stateline, Nevada this week. The chance of the yes opened at +1600, but it was paid up to +400 in the days before Friday’s first round. As of Thursday, 99% of the money put on the prop was on the yes at Caesars / William Hill, including a $ 1,900 bet on the yes at + 1,400 placed on June 27 and a net $ 26 600 would pay.
“We actually have a significant liability on the prop,” Nick Bogdanovich, director of trade for William Hill US, said in a company statement. ‘They took the big plus price [on the yes] that he would finish there. It has been the most popular prop so far. ‘
Former NFL fullback and current CBS announcer Tony Romo, a two-time winner at the event, is the favorite to win the tournament at +150. Retired professional tennis player Mardy Fish, last year’s champion, is next at +225, followed by former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder (+400) and former LPGA star Annika Sorenstam (+700).
Barkley is 7,500-1 to win the tournament – and people are betting on him. Only four golfers – Sorenstam, Romo, Mulder and former MLB pitcher John Smoltz – attracted more bets than Barkley, according to Caesars / William Hill. The biggest bet on Barkley to win was $ 50 starting Thursday.
Barkley battled the 18th hole in the final round to reach 69th place during last year’s tournament with a field of 70 players.
“I play really well,” Barkley told a news conference ahead of the tournament. “I’ve improved a lot over the last few years. I actually started playing well there – better, I do not have to say good.”
There are 89 participants in this year’s field. The tournament, which uses the Stableford Scoring System, kicks off Friday in Edgewood Tahoe South.
