The new Belgian season started in an interesting way on Friday night, as both teams shared the loot in Liege
Theo Bongonda saved a point for Paul Onuachu’s Genk with his draw in their 1-1 draw against Standard Liege.
Bongonda paired with Nigeria’s Cyril Dessers for the 92nd minute as they avoided the defeat in the Belgian first division from 2021-22 to 2021-22.
Onuachu led Genk’s attacking line in the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, but he was able to find the back of the net in the 62nd minute.
The top scorer of the First Division A series in the 2020-21 series was replaced by Dessers, who later helped the visitors cancel konstantinos laifis’ starting link in the 69th minute.
Ghana’s John Paintsil was also in action for Genk after coming off the bench in the 71st minute, while Standard Liege had Cameroon’s Collins Fai, Jackson Muleka of DR Congo and Moussa Sissako of Mali on parade.
The hosts are led by Senegal coach Mbaye Leye and they will turn their attention to next Sunday’s trip to Zulte-Waregem for their second league match.
Genk, on the other hand, will host their next league match on July 30, according to KV Oostendefor, before taking on Shakhtar Donetsk in a qualifying Uefa Champions League match on August 3.
