The wing has struggled since the arrival of the head coach to secure a starting place under Thomas Tuchel
Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, but the Blues are currently refusing to let the English international head through the exit. Purpose understand.
The wing, a three-time star of three lions, struggled to get a starting spot under Thomas Tuchel, having previously been impressed under his predecessor Frank Lampard.
It appeared the 20-year-old would stay at Stamford Bridge during the 2021-22 campaign, but now a spate of new suitors has emerged for his signature as the deadline for the transfer looms.
Although there is no formal approach, Bundesliga heavyweights Dortmund are the youngest major European team to show an open interest in bringing Hudson-Odoi into their ranks.
Marco Rose’s side is presumably at the top of a list of possible suitors who want to turn the side of the wing while the last few days run out of the summer window.
But every bid will likely be met with great resistance, with Tuchel believing he should stay with the Blues in west London.
Hudson-Odoi sniffs out Young Lions
Tuchel is even more surprised about – although with respect for – the decision by the 20-year-old to refuse the call to represent the English under-21 team during the international break.
After winning his last match for the senior team in 2019, Hudson-Odoi was again overtaken by Gareth Southgate for the qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar in September 2022.
How the choice to get out of Lee Carsley’s plans will change his relationship with the Three Lions setup remains to be seen, though there are fears it could hamper his future.
The bigger picture
Chelsea’s determination to retain Hudson-Odoi indicates their conviction that he should play a key role while looking for further silverware under Tuchel this term.
Having already won the Super Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Villarreal, the Blues will be focused on domestic and European issues – plus the World Cup club – during the 2021-222 campaign.
They made few purchases this past summer, with Romelu Lukaku as the newest site, and the lack of activity speaks to their satisfaction with players like Hudson-Odoi already in their ranks.
