Former England captain Michael Vaughan is really pleased to see Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed enter into a fifty partnership on day 1 of the running Headingley Test In the. That was after England patients took out the visitors for a total of 78.
England made changes for the third Test after escaping in the first draw and bowling themselves in the second Test. Their batting is under scrutiny and has come under heavy criticism this year for their over-reliance on captain Joe Root.
Zak Crawley was dropped in front of Hameed before the second Test. Dom Sibley, who has been the opening partner for Rory Burns since last year, was dropped for the third Test. David Malan got a recall after three years and Hameed was promoted to open with Burns.
Although England had to feel in a dominant position after their bowlers sent India down for a low total in two sessions, they would not have finished with their worries as their top order was like a thin paper this year.
On Wednesday, however, the new opening pair clicked. Hameed, who returns to the Test squad four years after his debut series in 2016, and Burns, England’s trusted opener since Alastair Cook, have currently scored 62 runs in 24 overs.
They would have been nervous against a strong 4-point Indian pass attack, but that soon subsided when Ishant Sharma sprayed some irregular deliveries. The pair were going fast with 21 runs in 7 overs at Tea.
Post Tea, while Bumrah and Shami sharpened the crew, boundaries sometimes came up and not as much pressure was created as Virat Kohli would have hoped. There were a few edges that fell short under slips, and a few plays and misses, but luck, as with the bowlers earlier, was with the English batsmen. They dominated the loose balls while respecting the good ones.
Michael Vaughan praises English openers:
Michael Vaughan was delighted to see the new opening pair, Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed, thrive.
‘The bowling of England was great, but I expect the ball to move around with the ball. However, it is this opening partnership that is the best part of the day, ‘tweeted Michael Vaughan as Burns and Hameed closed to the whole of India.
England’s bowling was great .. but I expect that with the ball moving around .. it is this opening partnership that is the best part of the day. #ENGvIND
