Champions League: Sevilla’s En-Nesyri set undesirable record in Salzburg draw

The Spanish top team was kept at home by the Austrians, while the Moroccan attacker registered his name in an unwanted book.

Youssef En-Nesyri became the sixth Moroccan to be sacked in a Champions League match following his dismissal in Sevilla’s 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old was sent off by referee Aleksei Kulbakov for a second caution in the 50th minute of the strongly contested meeting at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

En-Nesyri was first discussed in the 26th minute, but he was shown the way out with the score 1-1.

Medhi Benatia was the last player from the North African country to receive a red card against Manchester City in November 2014 in Bayern Munich.

Salzburg got the first chance to take the lead in the 13th minute after German international of Nigerian origin, Karim Adeyemi, was looted in the box by Diego Carlos.

The youngster dusted him off to take the ensuing kick, but fired his kick off the target.

Eight minutes later, the visitors get another kick from the penalty spot, after Jesus Navas pushed Adeyemi into the box. This time Luka Sucic made no mistake when he hit the ball past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

In the 37th minute, Kulbakov gives Salzburg another penalty kick. Sucic got up to tackle it, but his effort bounced back from the goal post.

Three minutes before the end of the first half, Sevilla got their own penalty kick, while Ivan Rakitic got up to pass for the hosts.

In the second half, the men of Julen Lopetegui strengthened their game and dominated the ball possession. However, their ambition to achieve a comeback victory suffered a massive blow after the Moroccan imports were sacked, punished in a desperate attempt to win the fifth penalty of the day.

With no goals left in the remaining minutes, both teams each score a point.

Sevilla travel to the Volkswagen Arena for their next Champions League outing against Wolfsburg on 29 September.

On the same day, the Austrian Bundesliga kings Salzburg welcome the reigning Ligue 1 kings Lille in the Stadium Wals-Siezenheim.

Before that time they play a match against Rapid Vienna and Wolfsberger AC in league matches.
