There is a sense of inevitability surrounding a Blues move for the Belgian, but the manager evaded questions about an official bid
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has said that ‘many players want to join’ but that he will not be reported on reports that Romelu Lukaku could switch to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Purpose recently reported that the Blues are preparing a new bid for the Inter striker after rejecting their original offer, and Lukaku is now open to returning to the club.
However, Tuchel holds his cards close to his chest.
What was said?
Tuchel told reporters during a press conference after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham: ‘I will not talk about players not playing in my squad. He’s a fantastic player, but he’s an Inter player and I would not talk about him in this situation.
‘You might think a lot of players want to join, but we will not talk about it.
‘The board does not offer players; this is not how it works. We talk to the board about players, we have our own opinions, and ultimately we aim for players who in our opinion can make our team strong, which is quite a challenge.
‘There are some players we think can be a good goal and improvement in our team. I will not comment on names as I do not like it when other coaches talk about my players. So hopefully you understand that. ”
Does Chelsea need a new striker?
Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz all ranked number nine under Tuchel, but no one is seen as an out-and-out target man who can play with his back to the goal.
Tuchel indeed conceded so much and added: ‘With the retirement of Olivier Giroud [to AC Milan], we can use a player who plays with his back to the goal, and that means we can add this direct style of play. This is the kind of profile we do not have in the group, which can be useful.
‘But not in vain and not in a panic. Whatever happens, we will be competitive and we trust our guys. We have young players in the attacking part of the game that we require improvements. We are relaxed and at the same time aware of our situation. ”
Can an agreement be reached with Lukaku?
Given the dire financial situation of Inter, even after the sale of Achraf Hakimi with big money, Goal understands that Chelsea are confident that a bid of € 130m (£ 111m / $ 154m) will be enough to bring the Nerazzurri up to to attract a sale.
For the player’s side, Lukaku himself recently told the Inter hierarchy that he is ready to return to Stamford Bridge if a fee can be agreed between the clubs.
