The Argentine has assured Blaugrana fans that he will play for the club in 2021-22, despite seeing his friend and compatriot leave
Sergio Aguero has denied reports that he wants to leave Barcelona after Lionel Messi’s retirement.
Aguero joined Barca earlier this summer for a free transfer after reaching the end of his last contract at Manchester City, where he spent the previous ten years of his career.
The 33-year-old’s desire to connect with the Argentine international Messi at club level is cited as one of the main reasons for his move to Camp Nou, but the dream came to naught after the Blaugrana could not re-sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
What was said?
Messi reached an agreement on a new five-year deal with Barca after ending up in the free agency pool in June, but the club were ultimately unable to link a valued asset to new terms due to current wage restrictions in La Liga.
Aguero was reportedly reacting angrily to the news, asking its representatives to review the terms of his contract.
However, the former City star had no idea that he arrived at Barça’s training ground at the weekend.
“Do not worry, you have been with me all year,” Aguero told reporters.
The Argentine also went on social media to wish Messi well with the next phase of his career, and posted a picture of the pair on Instagram with the caption: “All the best in whatever comes, my friend. And always with a smile. I like you. “
Barca president Joan Laporta has already explained why Messi could not extend his stay at Camp Nou, but the 34-year-old will address the club’s supporters for the last time and gives his side of the story ahead of their Joan Gamper Trophy final Sunday against Juventus.
After the match, speculation about where the six-time Ballon d’Or will follow is likely to increase, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly leading the race for his autograph after opening talks with his representatives.
Aguero, meanwhile, are in line to make their Barça debut against Juventus, and he is expected to carry the club’s main goal load in the new season in the absence of Messi.
Ronald Koeman’s team will open their latest La Liga campaign at home to Real Sociedad on August 15, with further new notes, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia are also likely to clash with Aguero for a few minutes.
