In the current first Test between England and India, Virat Kohli’s decision to drop Ravichandran Ashwin from India’s game XI surprised everyone. Fans and experts expected India to include the Tamil Nadu cricketer, but the Indian captain went along Ravindra Jadeja as the only spinner next to four seam bowlers.
Not so long ago, Ashwin had the first cycle of the World Cup (WTC) as the leading wicketkeeper. The off-spinner also had a decent outing Surrey in a County Championship match right before the start of the series. Despite all this, when Ashwin was not selected in the last XI, several former cricketers expressed their disappointment.
Former opener in India Wasim Jaffer was left in disbelief when he tweeted a picture of Nasser Hussain in the comment box with the caption: “No Ashwin ?!”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was also surprised by India’s decision not to include Ashwin.

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman was not impressed with Team India’s tactics to drop Ashwin. Laxman reckons Ashwin is a solid match winner, and to take on a player like him was completely incomprehensible.
‘For me, if you choose a bowler who will bat at number 8, I will choose a bowler who can deliver matches with the ball, and for me it is R Ashwin. “So I would have gone with the balance that India had in the WTC final.” Laxman tells ESPNCricinfo.
‘In the past I played in a team where you had four fast bowlers, and one of the fast bowlers always bowled. I therefore do not know why Virat Kohli and the team management made this decision, “ added Laxman.
