English captain Joe Root continued from where he left off in the first Test, defeating a remarkable century in the running second Test at Lords Cricket Ground Saturday in London.
The right-handed batsman reached the three-pointer on the third ball of the 82nd over when he tapped on a short delivery through Jasprit Bumrah to show point for an ankle.
It was Root’s second century in a series of five games and the 22nd ton of his illustrious Test career. During the process, the Yorkshire team passed legendary Graham Gooch and becomes only the second English player to reach the standard of 9000 runs.
Most Test runs for England:
- 12 472 – Alastair Cook
- 9013 – Joe Root *
- 8900 – Graham Gooch
Root is also the leading runner among the four of modern cricket and the only active player to score 9000 plus runs in the longest format.

- 7589 – Virat Kohli

Reat Great batsman, good innings. Century Number 22 by Joe Root. Only two Englishmen now have more test hundreds – Kevin Pietersen 23 and Alastair Cook 33. #EngvInd

Joe Root is the first English player to score hundreds of consecutive innings in Tests since Ian Bell in Ashes 2013. During this period, every other team except Afg & Ire had at least one batsman.#ENGvIND

If Root plays well, think of two words – Neat and neat. His fifth Test of the year.
The only encouraging sign for India is that the new ball is swinging a bit. A little more nip and bounce.
Gaps in the cordon do not really help.

6 Test 50s for Joe Root this year; he converted 5 of them into 100s.
They say that the English Test captaincy will eventually take down your batting – it certainly does not happen for Root in the 5th year of his captaincy

One of the big runs of this, for Joe Root. Seems absolutely sublime, and the schedule lets him make the most of it.

Excellent ton. The best English batsman they all carry alone.
