England FA condemns ‘disgusting’ racist abuse of Rashford, Sancho and Saka

The trio were targeted online after missing penalties in a final loss to Italy for Euro 2020

The English FA has condemned racist abuse on social media targeting Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka following the final loss of the Three Lions in Euro 2020 against Italy.

Rashford, Sancho and Saka missed the spot in Sunday’s shootout, ending England’s hopes of winning a trophy on home soil.

In the hours that followed, all three were subjected to abuse on social media, and the FA quickly condemned the ‘disgusting’ messages sent to the players.

What was said?

“We can not be clearer that someone behind such disgusting behavior is not welcome to follow the team,” the FA said in a statement.

“We will do everything in our power to support the players affected, while insisting on the most severe penalties possible for all those responsible.

“We will continue to do everything in our power to eliminate discrimination, but we urge the government to act swiftly and bring in the appropriate legislation so that this abuse can have consequences in real life.

“Social media companies need to act and take responsibility and take action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that could lead to prosecution and support to free their platforms from this kind of heinous abuse.”
