India and England include horns in the 5th edition of the Pataudi Trophy from 04 August, and the unit led by Virat Kohli will be determined to allay the disappointments of the 2018 tour and their first Test series victory in England since the summer of 2007 to achieve.
Trego reckoned during an interview with Times of India that the outcome of the series will be determined by the way the Indian batsmen can handle the seam and swing of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
‘If England go to India, the question arises: can the batsmen of England face the turn? And when India tour England, the question is: can the Indian batsmen handle the swing of James Anderson and Stuart Broad? So, it’s clearly going to be fascinating. If you have had a good preparation time in England, they need to be adapted to the temperature and conditions, the way the ball moves around a bit. So, I think it will be close. “But my prediction is that England will beat India 2-1 in the series,” said Peter Trego.
Asked about the key battles that could determine the fate of the series, Trego reckons that the dispute between Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli and the legendary James Anderson will be extremely important.
He also reckoned that the duo of Ashwin and Jadeja would be equally crucial.
A real fight is James Anderson vs, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. I think James will target these three wickets. The way he swings the ball in both directions is incredible. This is going to be a real key battle. English bowlers against Jadeja and Ashwin will be another important battle. Jadeja and Ashwin will also be very important, “he added.
When asked to select two Indian players who could be the difference between the two teams, Trego was quick to point out opener Rohit Sharma and captain Virat Kohli.
Kohli smashed 593 runs during England’s last tour and Trego believes that if the Indian captain reappears, the visitors could win their first Test series in England after 14 years.
Rohit Sharma. If he gets James Anderson in his hands, he could be a match winner. And it goes without saying that Virat Kohli is going to be absolutely crucial. “If Virat Kohli shows up and he plays well, it will be a very close series, and my 2-1 victory in England could be threatened,” said Trego.
