England announced their squad for the fourth Test against India at The Oval. The versatile Chris Woakes received a recall to the side after recovering from his heel injury.
Jos Buttler, who is awaiting the birth of his second child, misses the game that starts on September 2nd. In his place, Jonny Bairstow must put on the gloves for the fourth Test.
“We wish Jos and his family all the best with the impending birth of their second child. Unfortunately he will miss this Test, and we will see if he returns for the final Test at Emirates Old Trafford.”
“Jonny Bairstow will take over the wicketkeeper, which he enjoys. As we all know, he has the skills to take over seamlessly from Jos and the ability to score important runs in the middle order, if asked,“England head coach Chris Silverwood said.
Meanwhile, Sam Billings, a regular baller who last played for England in a T20I series against Pakistan a few months ago, has been included as a backup option for wickets. Billings is very popular among English players and will be a good addition even if he does not play, according to Silverwood.
“Sam Billings, who was in the Test squad for the New Zealand series earlier this summer, is returning as a reserve holder. He understands how we want to approach our cricket and is a popular member of the group. He will fit in well with the rest of the group,“The coach continued.
Woakes, who last played a Test in 2020, has recovered from his broken heel after falling down the stairs. Silverwood calls Woakes an ‘acquisition’ and was very pleased with the return of one of England’s best bowling all-rounder.
“It is very pleasing that Chris Woakes is returning to the Test squad. He bowled well with Warwickshire last week without any serious concerns about his heel injury.”
“He is an asset we missed, both with the ball and his ability to score runs in the middle order. We look forward to preparing him on the oval while undergoing back-to-back tests,Said Silverwood.
Mark Wood also makes a comeback after suffering a shoulder injury in the second Test at Lord’s. His shoulder was heavily strapped, but to the relief of the fans, Silverwood revealed that he had made rapid progress and would be available for the oval test.
“Mark Wood recovers excellently from his right shoulder. He bowled in the middle with our bowling coach Jon Lewis the last day at Headingley and started to get through his game painlessly. For the first time in this series, it’s nice to have several options with our bowling shares as we approach the final stages of the series,he added.
The series is currently tied at 1-1, while England made a telling statement on Friday with a crushing innings and a 76-run victory over the visitors. Silverwood mentioned that the series is perfectly ready for one of the teams to grab it.
“After the victory over Emerald Headingley, the Test series is beautifully ready against a strong Indian team that goes to the next test at the Kia Oval,he added.
