The name Tim David has been buzzing for the past year, and he finally got a call from an IPL franchise – the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the batsman of Singapore for the UAE leg of IPL 2021 as a replacement for Finn Allen.
Big changes in the RCB camp because, in addition to Tim David, they brought in the Sri Lankan pair Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera as replacements for Adam Zampa and Daniel Sams. Two other players – Scott Kuggeleijn and Kane Richardson – will also not play in the UAE.
Head coach Simon Katich has also resigned for personal reasons, and Mike Hesson, director of cricket operations, is taking over the coaching duties.
Who’s Tim David?
While the other incoming substitutes are well known in the international arena, Tim David, who represents Singapore, has made a name for himself as a tough batsman who plays in franchise leagues around the world.
The 25-year-old played in 49 T20 matches, in which he scored 1171 runs, averaging 36.59 — but more importantly, at 155.09. In 14 T20Is for Singapore, the right-hander averages 46.50, while rising to 158.52.
Even before his international debut, Justin Langer caught up with his Perth Scorchers team in the Big Bash League after learning about his potential as a coach. In the 2020/21 season, he played for the Hobart Hurricanes, and he shone brightly in the BBL score at 153.29 and hit 14 sixes in the tournament.
Then, for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2021., held partly in the UAE, he averaged 45 in 6 games while sailing at 166.66. He continued that amazing form for Surrey, scoring two centuries and fifty in his last four List-A games.
Tim David, whose base price was 20 Lakhs at the IPL 2021 auction, is unsold. But now he’s going to be part of his first IPL season. Mike Hesson was impressed by Tim David and reckons that the youngster could be given the responsibility of the middle order if AB de Villiers or Glenn Maxwell are not available.
‘With the departure of Finn Allen, we decided to strengthen our middle-order capabilities, so Tim David joined our group. He is currently part of the Southern Brave [at the Hundred], he has recently performed for Surrey and also Hobart Hurricanes – a powerhouse that could become a straight exchange for one of the two [Glenn] Maxwell or AB de Villiers also give us other options, if necessary, during the order, ”Hesson said after signing David.
RCB started the season brilliantly – for the first time they won their first four games in a season. They sit in third place with 5 wins and 2 losses. They resume their season on September 20 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi.
