Once the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the team of Team India for the T20 World Cup 2021, it attracts attention from all angles. Fans were happy to see the return of a high-quality spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and they were even happier to see the former skipper of India MS Dhoni to join the team as a mentor for the upcoming global competition.
But the absence of few players did raise a few eyebrows, as several fans and experts of the game showed their disappointment. One of the main points of discussion after the announcement of the team was the omission of senior Indian victim Shikhar Dhawan.
The left-handed batsman is India’s third highest run (1759) in the shortest format since. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This is one of the main reasons why many fans expressed their shock after not seeing Dhawan in the group of 15 members.
Former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer also shared his views on the red-hot topic. During a chat program on Sport Tak, Described Farokh Dhawan as a ‘special’ victim and said his failure surprised him. The 83-year-old expressed his disappointment, saying that the Delhi man had proven himself many times and that a player of his caliber should not be dropped.
‘Shikhar Dhawan … well, I’m surprised he was left out because he came in and did exceptionally well. But it is such a big problem for the Indian selectors that he drops players like Dhawan, which is a big disappointment because he would join any international team as a batsman. “He has proven himself time and time again, and I do not think a player of his caliber should be tried.” says Farokh.
Farokh, however, supported KL Rahul, who preferred Dhawan to do well in the girls’ tournament. The former international reckoned that the top of India’s board has selected a good team that has every chance of winning the worldwide prestigious event.
“But who do you drop? KL Rahul did very well. He is great; one of the best batsmen in the world, I think. Rohit Sharma is at the top of his form. “Still, I think it is a very good team that they have chosen, and I think we have every chance of winning the T20 World Cup.” added Farokh.
