FIBA EuroLeague Women: Epiphanny Prince rejoins Dynamo Kursk for week 2

The Russian club Dynamo Kursk has started the EuroLeague Women season 2021-22 strong, defeat VBW Arka Gdynia in the opening week of the competition behind 30 points and six steals from Slovenian center Eva Lisec and 22 points and 11 rebounds from US forward Natasha Howard.

Kursk is now running even stronger after week two, after adding the American guard Epiphanny Prince. Prince, whose Russian citizenship allows her to fit on Kursk’s list FIBA’s EuroLeague Women Fitness Rules, is no stranger to the team or the competition; she played for Kursk from 2012 to 2020 and a EuroLeague Women’s Championship 2017 with Nneka Ogwumike, Angel McCoughtry and Maria Vadeeva.

Such transactions are not at all uncommon in the course of a typical EuroLeague Women season. In the case of Kursk, Arike Ogunbowale, who was originally signed to play for the club, has not yet joined the team. Although Kursk is still expecting Ogunbowale later in the season, the addition of Prince will meanwhile give him more firepower.

In an interesting twist of fate, Prince’s first EuroLeague Women match with Kursk comes against the team she played for during the 2020-21 season, Galatasaray. The Turkish club finished 3-3 in group stage last season and lost in the first round of the play-offs; It starts the 2021-22 season less than impressive and allows it opening week match against rival club Fenerbahçe by 20 points. Galatasaray will need more from Chelsea Dungee (three points on 1-of-7 shooting in week one) while awaiting the arrival of Riquna Williams.

Elsewhere, two-time EuroLeague Women MVP Alina Iagupova and Fenerbahçe will try to keep it rolling against a Basket Landes team that was blown out in week one, while the 2021 WNBA No. 1 overall draft pick, Charli Collier, her debut in EuroLeague with Beretta Famila will make Schio. All games are streamed live and free on the EuroLeague Women YouTube channel.

Galatasaray also got a strong effort from his center last week – Tina Krajišnik scored 23 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a blowout loss for Fenerbahçe – but will need more from other players on the list if it’s going to upset Kursk. Despite the blowout, Galatasaray played four players for 35 minutes or longer, with Dungee importing just 20 minutes.

ZVVZ USK Praha (0-1) vs. MBA Moscow (0-1)

When: 12 hours ET

Where: Basket Hall Moscow, Moscow

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Maria Conde (ZVVZ USK Prague)

Match details: Praha was pushed up and lost by BLMA in week one 75-74 in a match lit up by a back-and-forth fourth quarter that ultimately ends in the French club’s favor. This is the type of game that Praha probably would not have dropped if Alyssa Thomas and Brionna Jones were with the team, but none of the players have turned up yet, so Praha will be cut short again in week two. Moscow are one of the weaker teams in this season’s EuroLeague Women pool – FIBA writer Paul Nilsen has their last in his preseason power rankings – so Prague has a good chance of taking this game without its two stars.

BLMA (1-0) vs. KSC Szekszárd (0-1)

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Olivia Epoupa, Haley Peters, Avery Warley-Talbert, Sydney Wallace (BLMA); Cyesha Goree, Nikolina Milic (KSC Szekszárd)

Match details: An Epoupa freestyle with four seconds left in regulation was the deciding point in BLMA’s nature victory in the first week over Prague, although the French club also got connecting play from Sydney Wallace (14 points) and withdrew as attacking 15 attacking rebounds. Szekszárd, on the other hand, was not nearly as impressive in his EuroLeague Women debut, and could not score a single quarter in a 80-59 loss to Umana Reyer. Needless to say, BLMA has the stronger team and will benefit in this one.

Sopron Basket (1-0) vs. VBW Arka Gdynia (0-1)

When: 12 hours ET

Where: Gdynia Arena, Gdynia

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Gabby Williams, Bernadett Border (Sopron Basket); Megan Gustafson, Morgan Bertsch (VBW Arka Gdynia)

Match details: Gdynia got an effective 26 points (11-from-15 shooting) from Gustafson in the openings, and she will have to repeat the effort against a Sopron club that has historically been known for its defense. Sopron probably won’t blow up many opponents this season – it has cried past Girona 68-63 in week one-but with Határ patrolling the paint and defending Williams on the perimeter, it will not be easy for opponents to win the slow, sharpening style of games the club likes to play.

Basket Landes (0-1) vs. Fenerbahce Safiport (1-0)

When: 12 hours ET

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Celine Dumerc, Marianna Tolo, Marine Fauthoux (Basket Landes); Alina Iagupova, Kayla McBride, Elizabeth Williams, Amanda Zahui B. (Fenerbahce Safiport)

Match details: There may not have been a more impressive all-encompassing effort than the one Fenerbahçe made in week one. The Group B favorites received 29 points and 11 assists from Iagupova, 21 points from McBride and 18 points, 11 rebounds and six rebounds from Williams en route to a dominant victory over Galatasaray. Conversely, Landes was disappointing, which allows almost 100 points to Beretta Famila Schio in its opener. Fenerbahçe still miss Satou Sabally and Jasmine Thomas, but should be favorably favored in this match.

TTT Riga (0-1) vs. Parfums Avenida Salamanca (1-0)

When: 14:30 ET

Where: Municipal Pavilion Würzburg, Salamanca

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Bella Alarie, Karlie Samuelson, Emese Hof, Silvia Dominguez, Maite Cazorla (Perfumerias Avenida Salamanca)

Match details: Avenida may have gotten more than he intended week one, although at the end of the day it was still able to survive MBA Moscow. Neither Katie Lou Samuelson nor Kahleah Copper are at Avenida yet, to be honest, so the way the Spanish club’s early season is scheduled is in its favor; Riga have little star power and dropped their match of the first week to UMMC Ekaterinburg 71-56, shoots 34.9 percent from the field.

Thursday, October 14

Umana Reyer (1-0) vs. UMMC Ekaterinburg (1-0)

When: 10 a.m. ET

Where: DIVS Sports Hall, Ekaterinburg

How to watch: FIBA YouTube Live Stream

Famous players: Kayla Thornton, Yvonne Anderson (Umana Reyer); Emma Meesseman, Maria Vadeeva, Alex Bentley, Alba Torrens (UMMC Ekaterinburg)

Match details: Ekaterinburg is significantly slimmer than we are used to – Brittney Griner, Jonquel Jones, Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley were all absent from the team in week one – but the remaining talent of the Russian club was more than enough to sail past Riga. Umana Reyer poses a much bigger threat, especially if Anderson shoots the ball as she last week (23 points, 7-of-12 off the field).

Spar Girona (0-1) vs. Beretta Famila Schio (1-0)

When: 13:30 ET

Schio will now make his first debut with Collier, for which he has chosen 10 points and 15 rebounds in the team’s most recent Lega Basket Femminile match, against Girona. Girona, meanwhile, dropped a close against Sopron; With Michaela Onyenwere recovering with an injured thumb, Burke and Gardner will have to carry the load with veteran Palau.
