The 23-year-old Super Eagle has signed a five-year contract before the new season
Brentford have confirmed the signing of Nigerian international Frank Onyeka from the Danish team, FC Midtjylland.
The promoted team has announced the arrival of the Super Eagle on a five-year contract and he will be the first sign for the club before the new season.
“Brentford have completed the signing of international midfielder Frank Onyeka, subject to international approval,” Brentford said in a statement on their Official Website.
A work permit for the 23-year-old was received over the weekend and he completed a medical study. Frank will compensate against FC Midtjylland, where Brentford owner Matthew Benham holds the majority share, for an unknown amount and sign a five-year contract.
‘He arrived in the UK yesterday [Monday], July 19, and will now undergo a period of quarantine before joining the group for training. ”
The statement continued: ‘Frank has spent his professional career at FCM, as they are known, and has been a regular in the Danish Super League for them for the past four seasons. He arrived in Denmark as an 18-year-old from FC Ebedei, a Nigerian club with links to FCM. He made it through to the first team and made his breakthrough in the 2017-18 season.
‘Frank was part of the FCM team that won the Super League in 2017-18 and played 15 matches. He helped them win the title again in 2019/20 and the Danish Cup in 2019. Frank played in the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League for FCM, and he made Denmark after 123 matches and scored 17 goals. ”
Brentford coach Thomas Frank described the player’s acquisition as a strong player for his team.
‘I’m looking forward to getting Frank into the building. We think he is a strong addition to the group, and we look forward to working with him. He’s a very dynamic player, ‘Frank told the same portal.
‘Frank plays as an eight in our system, he is very good at getting from box to box and will be valuable to us if we do not have the ball. He comes from the Danish league and was one of the best midfielders in that league; we think he has the potential to develop further.
“All the coaches here are looking forward to working with Frank and pushing him to a higher level.”
For his part, Rasmus Ankersen, co-director of Brentford, said: “Frank [Onyeka] is a player we know very well for obvious reasons. Over the past two years, he has grown to become the dominant midfielder in the Danish league, and his performances in the Champions League last season have convinced us that he is ready for the Premier League.
“With his pace, power and ability to win the ball, I’m sure Frank will be an excellent addition to the Brentford squad.”
Onyeka received his first call last season to play for Nigeria and was selected in the friendly match against Algeria where he made his debut.
Brentford take on Arsenal on 13 August in their league start.
