The left-back will spend the 2021-22 campaign in Ligue 1 after securing a loan transfer to the Girondins
The French team Girondins de Bordeaux secured the services of Ghana defender Gideon Mensah and handed him the number 14 jersey.
The left-back joins the Ligue 1 kit for a season-long loan, with the option to sign a permanent contract at the end of the initial period.
He moved from the Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.
“FC Girondins de Bordeaux is pleased to announce the arrival of Gideon Mensah, who has been loaned out with the option to buy for the upcoming season,” the Girondins announced Official Website.
“A talented full-back, RB Salzburg player in the Admiral Bundesliga (Austria), was loaned to Vittoria Guimares last season. In Portugal, he played 22 games on the left.
“The club welcomes him!”
Mensah will continue his career in France after being in Portugal last season where he played for Vitoria Guimaraes.
In the Primeira League, the 23-year-old started in each of his 22 appearances for the conquerors.
“Gideon is a modern defender. He will give us all his energy. He is a player who will please our fans because he gives everything,” said Bordeaux sporting director Admar Lopes.
“Personally, I also want to thank him for trusting us in this new project.”
Bordeaux becomes the fourth club to lend Mensah since joining Salzburg in 2017.
The defender only moved to Sturm Graz in January 2019 for the second half of the 2018-19 season, before being transferred to Zulte Waregem for a full campaign.
Last term he went on the road again, this time to join Guimaraes.
At Bordeaux, the fullback could make his Ligue 1 debut against Clermont when the club’s season starts on Sunday.
A Ghanaian international, Mensah, will be hoping to take his game to the next level to give himself an edge over Chelsea defender Abdul Rahman Baba in their fierce battle for the Black Stars’ backfield.
In June, the two players were each played in a match, while CK Akonnor’s team Morocco and Ivory Coast tackle in international friendly matches.
The Black Stars will meet again in September for 2022 qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.
