The Spanish manager will be without two midfield stars for the Community Shield after signing another recently
Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden have been away for a while, says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Foden left England’s duties on crutches because he missed the Euro 2020 final due to injury, while De Bruyne also suffered an injury during the tournament with Belgium.
The English midfielder is expected to miss both the Community Shield and the start of the season, while De Bruyne may be back in time to tackle Tottenham in City’s first Premier League game.
What did Guardiola say?
‘Phil is gone for a while, a serious injury; we have to be careful, ‘Guardiola said.
“Kevin is still out. I think he will probably return a little earlier than Phil. But both are out for a while.”
Guardiola added: ‘Today, the managers in the big clubs, there are a lot of international players – we can not work. We are here to handle the team spirit as well as possible, the time when you have four or five weeks to prepare.
“Half the team is out and we’re not complaining. It’s a pleasure to play the Community Shield. I’m happy in the sixth season and my players know what to do.
“So hard, the schedule is crazy, so tough.”
Guardiola on Grealish
While Foden and De Bruyne will miss the time, City did recently added another midfielder in Jack Grealish.
At his unveiling, Grealish revealed how excited he is to play with De Bruyne and Foden, said the former is there, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the best in the world.
But Guardiola, which confirmed the club’s interest in Harry Kane on Friday, says the former Aston Villa midfielder is not quite ready to start as he will need time to adjust to the club.
“He is not ready to start – only a week’s training – but he is traveling and sitting on the bench and we will see what happens,” Guardiola said.
“Normally, top players adapt quickly to the physical, he must understand. Maybe I’m wrong and we can not help him, but I have a feeling he knows what to do. ”
