The Durand Cup is named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of British India from 1884 to 1894, and is the oldest and the world’s third oldest soccer tournament in the world.

The Durand Cup, traditionally organized by the Indian Army, was first held in 1988 in Shimla as an Army Cup. It was initially only open to British Army troops in India, and has been open to civilian teams since 1940, as Mohammedan Sporting defeated the Royal Warwickshire Regiment 2-1 to become the first civilian team to win the tournament. .
