Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has backed his former team-mate and Australian head coach Justin Langer following the turmoil in the Australian media over his position.
Cricket Australia supported Justin Langer to continue as head coach of the team ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and then for the Ashes at home. There were reports of the coach having tears among the players, and he was also held accountable for his coaching style.
I know there has been a lot of negativity for Justin Langer over the past few weeks: Ricky Ponting
Ponting, who was Langer’s assistant head coach during the 2019 World Cup, expressed solidarity with his former team-mate and said that if anyone takes on the role of coach or captain for Australia, the negativity should be addressed.
“I do not doubt. I know there has been a lot of negativity over the last few weeks. I really felt for Justin, I called Justin a few times. “I and many of his good friends came to him,” Ponting told 2GB Radio.
“As I made it really clear to Justin, if you are in the position in Australian sport, whether you are a high profile coach or a captain of a national team, then you should expect the negativity,” he said. he added.
In May 2020, Australia jointly achieved the top position in the Test and T20I format on the ICC rankings, but after losing 1-2 in their Tests in India this year, they were pushed to the table.
The Australian cricket team suffered rugby rugby in the T20I series against Western India and Bangladesh in their recent tours. Ponting took note of the absence of the mainstream players during the tours.
‘If you do not turn back the clock even twelve months ago, the Australian team was the Test team and the T20 team in the world rankings, we know that all the talent is there. “The last tour to Bangladesh and the West Indies was quite difficult to judge the coaches, because I think there were eight or nine from the early XI for T20 and one day cricket was not there,” said Ponting.
Justin Langer is the kind of guy looking for advice anyway: Ricky Ponting
Recently, Australia’s two captains Aaron Finch and Tim Paine, along with vice-captain Pat Cummins, held an emergency meeting with Langer, where Earl Eddings, chairman of Cricket Australia, and Nick Hockley, chief executive, were also present.
Ponting said Langer is a person who wants to seek advice and focus on how he can improve himself.
‘It sounds like the captain and some of the senior players had a pretty direct conversation with Justin about the things they think he needs to get better at. But he’s also the kind of guy who’s looking for that kind of advice. He wants to find out how he can get better and what he can do better, ”said Ponting.
Cricket Australia has announced a group of 15 members led by Aaron Finch for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Australia play the first match of the Super 12 stage against South Africa on 23 October.
