Ilaix Moriba joins RB Leipzig for a € 16 million transfer from Barcelona

The Catalan giants paid the young man in after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract

RB Leipzig have signed a deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Ilaix Moriba.

The deal for the 18-year-old is initially worth € 16m (£ 13m / $ 19m), but could increase by € 22m (£ 19m / $ 26m) with bonuses. Barcelona will also maintain a selling price of 10 percent.

The teenager put a four-year deal on paper, with the option to pay an extra year.

Ilaix allowed to leave after contract dispute

Ilaix is considered one of the most talented youngsters to graduate from La Masia Academy in the past year, having made 18 senior appearances during a 2020-21 breakout campaign.

That’s why it’s going to be a big blow to lose him so early in his career after a tough summer for Barca. However, they will feel that they had little choice but to take in money now due to his persistent unwillingness to sign a new contract.

The Guinean – born midfielder’s deal would expire next year and Barca were unable to reach an agreement despite lengthy negotiations.

The Blaugrana felt its agents were demanding too high a salary, despite the fact that they had previously signed a three-year contract worth € 1 million a year – the highest salary awarded to a talent in their youth ranks.

Due to the dispute, Ilaix was released from pre-season action for both the first team and Barca B, making a retirement almost inevitable.

Manchester City, Chelsea and even big rivals Real Madrid are linked with a move for the talented youngster.

In the end, it was Leipzig who showed real interest, although their initial bid of € 8m (£ 7m / $ 9m) was immediately rejected.

Leipzig has since sold the midfielder Marcel Sabitzter to Bayern Munich, which probably freed up extra funds with which they could reach an agreement with Barca.
