The former captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Gautam Gambhir believes that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under the leadership of MS Dhoni will not have much pressure to qualify for the IPL 2021 play-offs.
Chennai Super Kings made a big difference in the first half of IPL 2021 after finishing seventh on the points ladder last year. The yellow brigade is currently in second place with 10 points behind the leaders of Delhi Capitals, and will probably need two or three more victories to book their place in the knockout phase.
CSK has players who do not play a lot of cricket, but it can sometimes be a blessing because you do not have the pressure to play international cricket: Gautam Gambhir
Only CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur have been selected in India’s provisional T20 squad, with fast bowler Deepak Chahar named as a reserved player.
The English duo of Moeen Ali and Same Curran, the versatile West Indies Dwayne Bravo and the South African bowler Lungi Ngidi are the team’s overseas players who are also part of their respective country’s groups for the mega-event.
Gambhir believes that many CSK players will not play after IPL international cricket, so there will be no pressure on them, and even if they start slowly in the second phase of IPL 2021, they would still qualify in the top – four.
‘Yes, they have players who do not play a lot of cricket, but it can sometimes be a blessing because you do not have the pressure to play international cricket or make a comeback. They have put themselves in a position that even if they start a little slow, it will not make a big difference. “If they start slowly in one or two games, you will still be able to qualify for the top four, and once you do that, it could be anyone’s game,” Gambhir told Star Sports.
CSK will be in a better position after playing in Wankhede Stadium: Gautam Gambhir
CSK played their first five matches at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai before moving to Delhi to play their other two matches. Dhoni and his men have won four of their five matches in Mumbai and Gambhir feels they will be in a better position after playing on tough ground like Wankhede.
‘Plus, after playing at the Wankhede, you’ll be better off if you meet these conditions, because Wankhede is a very difficult ground. They did something good to be in this position despite such a team. They will take the trust with them, “said Gambhir.
CSK play their first match in the second half of IPL 2021 against Mumbai Indians on September 19 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
