Former Indian versatile player Irfan Pathan was pleased with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award renamed as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Irfan Pathan also did not deviate from noting that sports stadiums should be named after famous sports personalities instead of political people. Irfan Pathan retired from international cricket in January 2020.
When the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad was renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium, several social media users expressed concern. In fact, there are many stadiums named after the political leaders in India. These include the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Former Indian Ministers Indira Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru also have ten prominent stadiums named after them. Recently we also renamed the Feroz Shah Kotla land in Delhi to the late Arun Jaitley.
Hopefully there will also be sports stadiums for sportsmen in the future: Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan said he very much welcomes the move from sports awards named after sports personalities and hopes it is the start of something new. The former left-arm swing bowler got an enthusiasm about the government and wanted to see stadiums named after sports icons as well.
“It simply came to our notice then. Sportsman who receives recognition and award is named after him or her. Hopefully many of such things start in sports (…) Hopefully the names of the sports stadium will also follow athletes in the future, ” Pathan tweeted.
Hopefully there will also be sports stadiums for athletes in the future.
