The Juventus midfielder was sent home before the team’s trip to Honduras after being suspended for the match against Canada
American men’s national team legend Landon Donovan says he is ‘incredibly disappointed’ in Weston McKennie, as he says the midfielder’s recent suspension leaves him in a place that ‘can hardly be repaired’.
McKennie suspended for Sunday’s qualifier against Canada for breach of Covid Protocols’ U.S. football policy announced Monday that McKennie will also be ruled out for the upcoming game against Honduras.
It’s not yet confirmed how McKennie broke the team rules, but Donovan, who says he told the full story, says it will take a long time before McKennie can earn the trust of his teammates.

“I’m just going to say I’m aware of what happened. I’m not going to make it public,” Donovan said. Football with Grant Wahl podcast. ‘I’m just going to say I’m incredibly disappointed in Weston, and incredibly disappointed. Is this the smartest thing to do? No, but I understand that.

With McKennie out, USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter has called in Jackson Yueill as a replacement for the team that currently handles multiple absences.
Gio Reyna, Zack Steffen and Sergino Dest have also all been ruled out for the match, forcing Berhalter to reform a bit for Wednesday’s match.
