The English wicketkeeper, batsman Jos Buttler, has returned to the squad for the 5th Test against India, while the hosts want to level the series. India defeated England by 157 runs in the previous Test at Oval on Monday, giving them a 2-1 lead in the final Test.
Buttler has taken leave in anticipation of the birth of his second child, but will now be available for the Manchester Test. Jack Leach, who was England’s best bowler when they toured India earlier this year, was also added to the squad. Sam Billings was part of the squad for the previous Test but was sent back to Kent.
“Jos will be available for Old Trafford and yes, a decision will be made, so we will make that in the coming days. I’m going to keep my thoughts to myself for now, I’m going to sleep over it and then of course I can make decisions out of it. Joe and I can talk and make a decision,“Said head coach Chris Silverwood.
The 39-year-old James Anderson has played all four games so far. Whether he is fit for the Test at home remains to be seen. Silverwood wants to make sure his front bowler is well rested and maintains his fitness.
“This will be a discussion he and I will have together. He will have input on this, no doubt. James knows his own body. I know how it is, he will not want to miss any cricket. We need to make sure we look after him. Although there is a gap between the last test and what lies ahead,he added.
On a flat deck at The Oval, one thing England lacked was an enormous pace in form Mark Wood. The coach confirmed that he was on their radar, and given how the field has been at Old Trafford in the past, Wood’s inclusion is definitely on the table.
“He’s definitely someone who’s getting into a fight again. We have some sore bodies, I’m not going to deny it, so we need to keep an eye on it, of course. He can come back, and if he does, he will of course add the pass for us. If the pitch is sharp as usual at Old Trafford, there should be reverse swing,”Silverwood added.
