Josh Hazlewood available for UAE leg, confirms CSK

Chennai Super Kings pacer Josh Hazlewood will travel to the UAE for the second half of the IPL 2021, the franchise confirmed Saturday.

The sly sailor withdrew from the tournament before it started in April, citing ‘personal reasons’. CSK then replaced him with his compatriot Jason Behrendorff.

But now Josh Hazlewood, who is also in the T20 World Cup in Australia, has made himself available for the rest of the IPL that will be played in the UAE, the same place for the World Cup. That would mean CSK would have to release Behrendorff from their squad, according to the tournament’s replacement rule.

“Hazlewood has confirmed its availability for the second phase of IPL from 19 September. The BCCI has confirmed that players who were not available in the first phase can join the respective teams in the second phase if they are fit and available. Given Hazlewood’s form, he will be an excellent addition to our team, ‘said CSK CEO KS Viswanathan in a statement issued by the franchise.

Josh Hazlewood has returned to Australia’s T20 setup for their tours to Western India and Bangladesh. He picked up 12 wickets in 8 matches on the two tours against an excellent economy of 6.55.

He made his IPL debut last season in the UAE for MS Dhoni’s side. He competed in 3 matches and could only handle a single wicket, but bowled painfully again – with a leak of only 6.40 runs or more.

CSK players, including MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, start training in Dubai after completing quarantine

The CSK contingent, including Captain MS Dhoni, began their training at the ICC Academy in Dubai. They arrived in Dubai on August 13 and arrived straight in quarantine at their hotel in The Palm.

After completing their 6-day quarantine, the players held their first training session on Thursday. Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, Karn Sharma and Deepak Chahar also joined the skipper for some football practice.

After a disappointing season last year – CSK could not qualify for the play-offs for the first time – the Yellow Army roared with 5 wins in 7 matches this year before the tournament was suspended and placed second on the standings. They resume the tournament against defending champions Mumbai Indians on September 19 in Dubai.
