NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – JT Poston shot a bump-free 6-under-66 on Friday to advance to the second round of the PGA Tournament’s Barbasol Championship.
Poston had a total of 13 under 131 on the rain-soaked Keene Trace in the tournament which was delayed twice on Thursday due to rain and lightning. Due to the wet conditions, players were allowed to use preferences in the clean field.
“It was really good,” Poston said. “Only hitting the ball was much better than I would say it has been the last few months. Just nice to make myself look great. They are green, it’s soft. Hitting the ball near the hole and you can also make some holes make. ‘
Poston left birdies on the par-4 seventh and par-5 eighth in the round that started at number 10.. The 28-year-old former West Carolina player won the 2019 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro for his lone PGA Tour tournament.
He said he was comfortable with Keene Trace’s greens.
“They’re a lot like what I grew up with in Hickory, North Carolina,” Poston said. “They’ve bent and they’re about the same speed I was probably used to when I was a kid. It just brings back some good memories of growing up the green set. It feels normal to me. “
“It was softer today,” Armor said. “Definitely that the rain yesterday afternoon, the two rain delays we had, did not get a bounce on the driver, it was a hit and plug, which I would love very much if it reflected a little more, the length I hit it, but I can still reach three of the par 5s, which is good for me. ‘
“Of course not today was quite so good,” Stuard said. “I didn’t think I was hitting my irons as well as I did yesterday, but hung in there nicely and was able to set up a good score, which is good.”
Pendrith completed his late afternoon round in the rain.
Defending Champion Jim Herman was 7 down to a 70. He won in 2019, and the event was canceled last year.
Will Grimmer, who was in the lead with Stuard, after closing an opening 64 that morning, shot a 74 in the second round to drop to 6 under.
Wilco Nienaberthe great South African who got a foreign exemption to play had a 71 to get to 5 under.
John Daly missed the cut with rounds of 76 and 70.
