The former Brighton & Hove Albion player sought the opinion of his former Masandawana coach before making a decision
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has revealed that Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau first consulted him before the player decided to join Al Ahly.
Mokwena says he had a two-hour “emotional” conversation with Tau that was unveiled on Thursday as Al Ahly’s new player.
The Bafana star has left Brighton in the Premier League to join the reigning African champions coached by former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane.
“I have my opinion on this, I am privileged to have first-hand access to Percy Tau, and I am humbled that he called me two or three weeks ago before he made a decision,” Mokwena said. Sowetan Live.
‘Percy knows my opinion on this and our discussion was an emotional two-hour conversation between father and son. I know Percy’s feelings about where his career is and what he would like to do.
‘I know his idea of what he wants to achieve in football, but I think he knows my feelings about this issue and some things that keep us behind closed doors because it’s extremely sensitive.
“Things are said because there is mutual love and trust, and Percy has my support, no matter what decision he makes, and he knows it.”
Mokwena and Tau have worked together since the player was in the development teams of Sundowns.
Joining the Egyptian giants is an end to a period of frustration for the Bafana forward since January in Brighton, where his playing opportunities were limited.
He becomes the first South African to play for Al Ahly, following in the footsteps of Mosimane, who became the first tactician from the country to coach in Egypt.
“Percy is a strong man, he’s like Messi. He has so much to show you every week. So let’s give him a chance to show, “said Mosimane. recently said .
‘If Al Ahly could be the third biggest team in the world and beat the South Americans [Palmeiras] representing the whole of South America, then Al Ahly is a good team.
‘Percy is now 27. Do you want him to retire without playing football? Then we have the label of him playing in the EPL. He does not play in the EPL. They keep lending him. They now have a preseason and play friendly matches. “
