While falling on the outer cover position at the edge of the circle during the penultimate incident of Sri Lanka’s chase, Navdeep Saini, who had not bowled once in the match, jumped into the air for an aerial shot by Chamika Karunaratne to stop; he lands uncomfortably on the ground and lies there for a while, holding his shoulder. The highway was soon attended by the physio and was taken off the field.
Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said the pacemaker would be constantly monitored and a call on his availability for the third and decisive T20I would be taken on Thursday, match day. However, he indicated that a change is likely because Navdeep Saini may not recover less than 24 hours from the injury.
‘In the case of Navdeep, I think the medical team is dealing with him. We will assess the situation, maybe tonight or in the morning and decide accordingly, ‘Mhambrey said at the post-match press conference.
“And I think that once the decision is finalized and passed on to the selectors and the coach, I think we will continue and then, if necessary, make any changes, we will do it,” he added.
India adds all five net bowlers to the main group:
India had to play just five true batsmen in the second T20I as 9 players were forced into isolation on Tuesday, the day Krunal Pandya tested positive for covid-19 and the second T20I was postponed until Wednesday. 8 players are considered in close contact with Krunal and all have been quarantined.
The BCCI then added all five net bowlers on the tour – Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, Sai Kishore, Simarjeet Singh – to the main group.
Now, after Navdeep Saini’s injury, one of them stands a chance to make his Indian debut in the third T20I. Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh, after impressing everyone with the ball in IPL 2020 and IPL 2021 and being someone with a good range of slower balls, is likely to be a candidate to replace Navdeep Saini.
So does Sai Kishore, the Tamil Nadu left-hander. With the field helping the spinners greatly, Kishore, who can also be a handy lower-order batsman, can also be seen making his international debut.
