The Blaugrana supremo admits that attempts have been made to return a Brazilian superstar to Camp Nou, while a hot prospect will not be sold
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has acknowledged this Attempts have been made to take Neymar back to Camp Nou when he returned to the office in Catalunya, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward making it clear he ‘wanted to come’.
Since the Brazilian international left La Liga giants for Ligue 1 heavyweights as part of a record transfer package of € 222 million (£ 195m / $ 240m) in 2017, there has been speculation about a return to Spanish soil.
It is said that Neymar would like to reunite with Lionel Messi – which later happened in France – and Barca leaves a door open for a familiar face before signing a new contract at Parc des Princes.
What was said?
Laporta, who was appointed Barca president for the second time in March, said Esport3 to the question of whether a South American superstar has a vision when he returns to Camp Nou as successor to Josep Maria Bartomeu: ‘Yes, we tried to sign Neymar again.
“He contacted us and wanted to come.”
Neymar finally signed a new contract with PSG in May, with the agreement that will keep him in the French capital until the summer of 2025.
What about Ansu Fati’s future?
While Neymar never returned and Messi leaves Barcelona during a summer of serious savings, Laporta is not willing to participate with other valued assets.
Antoine Griezmann is another one who has been allowed to continue, with the French forward returning to Atletico Madrid, but the Blaugrana are very much hoping for La Masia graduate Ansu Fati.
The 18-year-old suffered serious injuries last season, but he’s back now and has inherited the famous No. 10 jersey that Messi evacuated at his departure.
Laporta maintains that the highly regarded Spanish international will not be downloaded any time soon, and there is no content of reports suggesting he could be used to free up more money.
“These are lies. Never,” Laporta added.
“Ansu was brave, he accepted that he was wearing the number 10 shirt.”
Will Barcelona add again?
As books in Catalunya are in balance, the hope is that Barca will soon be able to draw their attention to bringing top talent to their books.
Laporta is confident that this will be the case, with the plan to dive into the transfer market during 2022 for players who can take an ambitious outfit to the top of local and continental matches.
“Next year we will be able to draw more normally and achieve more ambitious goals,” Laporta added.
