Nwakaeme surpasses Ghana’s Cofie while Trabzonspor defeats Sivasspor

The two African stars were on target at Senol Gunes Stadium when the Black Sea Storm retained their unbeaten start to the season

Nigeria’s forward Anthony Nwakaeme and Ghana’s Isaac Cofie were on target when Trabzonspor defeated Sivasspor 2-1 in a Super Light match on Monday.

Cofie came off the bench to score the visitors’ only goal in Trabzon, but that was not enough to help them score their first league win of the season.

Anastasios Bakasetas opened the scoring for Trabzonspor in the 15th minute from the penalty spot, and later in the second half Nwakaeme doubled their lead with his second league goal of the campaign.

A week ago, the Super Eagles forward was one of the targets when the Black Sea Storm beat in a 5-1 victory over Yeni Malatyaspor in their Super Light starting camp.

Sivasspor’s chance for an equalizer came after Nigerian Olanrewaju Kayode earned a penalty in the 70th minute.

International Ivory Coast’s Max Gradel stepped forward to take the penalty kick, but he was unable to convert, allowing Cofie the setback.

The Ghana midfielder was introduced to Nigeria’s Azubuike Okechukwu in the 54th minute, and they also had two other Nigerians on parade, Kayode and Leke James.

Mali duo Mustapha Yatabare and Samba Camara were the other Africans in action for Sivasspor, while Guinea’s forward Fode Koita and Ivory Coast Gervinho were in action for Trabzonspor.

Monday’s result brought Trabzonspor to second place in the Super Light table after securing two wins in their first two games of the season.

Abdullah Avci’s team will aim to extend their league form to the Uefa Europa Conference League play-offs when they visit Roma on Thursday. They hope to fight back from a 2-1 loss and advance to the group stage.

After the European outing, Trabzonspor will play Giresunspor on Sunday for their next Super Light match.

Sivasspor also play in the play-offs of the Conference League and are looking for a 2-1 defeat for FC Kobenhavn when they travel to the capital of Denmark on Thursday for their return.

They are currently without a point after two games and their next league game is at home against Goztepe on Sunday.
